Questions

Where do these river levels come from?

From the real-time hydrometric network of the Water Survey of Canada (Environment and Climate Change Canada): about 2,149 gauges on rivers, streams and lakes. We download new readings every 30 minutes.

What does "above normal" mean?

We compare the latest flow (or water level when there is no flow) with the monthly averages recorded at the same gauge in past years. "Normal" is the middle half of those years for the current month; "very high" or "very low" means wetter or drier than 9 in 10 years.

Can I use this site for flood warnings?

No. Real-time data are provisional and can be wrong. For floods, follow your provincial flood forecasting centre and local authorities.

How often is this site updated?

We check Environment Canada for new readings every 30 minutes. Most stations measure every 5 to 15 minutes and transmit every hour or few hours, so readings usually appear here one or two hours after they are taken.

Is this an official government site?

No. Canada River Levels is an independent site that displays public open data from Environment and Climate Change Canada. For flood warnings and official figures, use the Water Office and your provincial flood forecasting centre.
